Counterfeit $50 notes found at Royal Adelaide Show spark warning

Royal Adelaide Show attendees have been warned to remain on the lookout for counterfeit cash as South Australia police investigate a number of fake bank notes circulating at the event.

Three counterfeit $50 notes were passed at three separate stalls at the Royal Adelaide Show between Thursday, September 7, and Friday, September 8, police said.

In one case on Thursday, a man handed a $50 note over to a stall employee, who then identified the note as being counterfeit.

“The man did not receive any items in exchange and left the stall prior to being asked about the note,” a police spokesperson said.

In a separate case, on the same day, a customer was given a counterfeit note after purchasing food at a stall.

On Friday, a third counterfeit note was identified by a stall employee.

The Royal Adelaide Show is held from September 1 to 9.

On the show’s first day this year, 50,000 people attended.

Show attendees are being encouraged to inspect any money they receive at the event, and, if they identify a counterfeit note, to report to police the time and location when they received it.

Police recommend handling such notes as little as possible and storing it in an envelope.

“Please be prepared to tell police the time and place where you believe you were passed the fake bank note and a description of the person or people you believe passed it to you,” police said.
