Water pump malfunction closes southbound I-280 ramp to Highway 87 in San Jose

Malfunctioning water pumps flooded two ramps on the southbound I-280, causing closures Wednesday as Caltrans works to repair the flood-prone stretch of highway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The closures affect the connector ramp from southbound Interstate 280 to State Route 87 – which connects to Mineta San Jose International Airport – and the southbound offramp for Bird Ave. CHP Officer Ross Lee said the water pump malfunction “completely submerged” the ramps.

Caltrans said it expects to reopen one lane of the Highway 87 ramp on Wednesday at 5:00 PM, while the agency did not provide a timeline for opening the Bird Ave. exit.

Highway 87, often likened to a rollercoaster for its dips, is notoriously vulnerable to flooding since it was built over a swamp near the Guadalupe River. Cal Trans has built a series of pipes in the area that are meant to remove groundwater from the highway.

The closure is not impacting traffic flow at the moment, but it may start to cause backups during rush-hour commutes, Lee said.
