BHUBANESWAR: Students of Utkal University on Monday staged demonstrations in the campus over different issues related to hostel facilities and accommodation. They met the warden and other authorities of the university and discussed the problems with the latter.
A group of students, most of them from Gopabandhu Chhatrabas (Boys’ Hostel-1), staged dharna in front of the office of hostel warden demanding resumption of canteen facility in the hostels, immediate allotment of hostel rooms for students and single room for second year PG students.
Laxmidhar Sahoo, a PG second year student, said the university normally allots single rooms to second year PG students. “But we have not received a single room so far. We need to focus on preparation for different competitive examinations and entrance tests like the national eligibility test (NET). For this preparation, we need a single room so that nobody can create disturbance while studying,” he added.
Chandan Kumar Jena, another PG second year student, said renovation work of two hostels (Hostel-3 and 4) are underway, that’s why second year students cannot be shifted to those hostels. “Hostel 7 can be used for allotment of first year students, and we can stay in the first and second hostels,” he added.
He said the canteen was not functioning in the hostels during the last two months. “We have to go outside to get food for ourselves. Some of the students are preparing food for themselves, but it is a tedious job. It is not easy for some of the financially poor students to get food from outside every day. We demanded the university authorities to resume operation of the hostel canteen,” he added.
A PG first-year student said the authorities should allot rooms for themselves immediately. “Our classes have started from August 21. We need hostel rooms urgently. Students coming from far-flung areas to study here are facing problems,” he added.
Prabodha Kumar Hota, hostel superintendent, Utkal University, said they have discussed with the students about the issues and assured them of help. “The process for allotment of hostel rooms has been started. Canteen for hostel students will be resumed soon,” he added.
