Next week AfterShock Comics will release Almost American #4, the latest issue in the real-life spy series. The true story of a pair of Russian operatives who attempt to defect to the United States, based on the story of Janosh and Victorya Neumann, is written by Ron Marz, with art by Marco Castiello and Beni Lobel, color art by Juancho!, and letters by Rus Wooton. Today The Beat is pleased to present an exclusive look at the issue, which finds the couples having settled into new lives – while being surveilled by their former home country.

Here’s how AfterShock describes Almost American #4:

Real-life spy games continue in this true story of Russian intelligence operatives forced to flee their homeland and forge new lives in America. As the Neumanns struggle to settle into new identities in the Pacific Northwest, they realize an assassin is stalking them.

Back when the series was first announced, story consultant Jan Neumann described how it feels to reflect on the decision to defect to the United States, and the impact it had on he and his wife’s lives:

“It’s hard to evaluate moments by how scary they were. But the major turning point moment for us occurred when we made the decision to go to the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic. This moment split our life into two parts: before and after. It was the most psychologically and emotionally complicated, complex, and stressful day we’ve ever experienced. It’s impossible to describe how we felt, and we’ll be reckoning with our decision for the rest of our lives.”

Check out the exclusive four-page preview of Almost American #4 below. The penultimate issue of the series is set to arrive in stores and digitally on Wednesday, January 19th.
