Odisha Paika Academy & Research Centre to come up in Khurda

Bhubaneswar: The state government will set up Odisha Paika Academy and Research Centre in Khurda district. This centre will promote and propagate Paika culture and tradition at national and international level, said the official sources.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik approved this proposal here on Friday. This centre will be established under the Odia language, literature and culture department for the all-round development of the rich tradition of Paika. It will be set up by following the model of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre.
According to a press release issued by the chief minister’s office here, special syllabus will be prepared to run courses and training programmes on Paikas and their martial art tradition. Facilities will be developed for research works on Paika. Scholarships will be provided to students choosing the courses on Paika.
Sources said this centre will be run temporarily at Khurda. Later a place will be earmarked for the centre. Chief minister has directed Khurda collector to select a site for the centre and prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for this project.
During 5T secretary VK Pandian’s Khurda visit last month, members of different Paika outfits had urged him to promote and propagate the Paika culture and tradition. They had discussed with Pandian about protection of this glorious culture. He had assured the Paika outfit leaders of help.
Paika rebellion was organized in 1817 under the leadership of Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Mohapatra against British rule. It is known as the first war of independence. “The academy and research centre will help in conducting research on Paika culture and tradition and Paika rebellion. It will also work to preserve Paika culture,” said Naveen in an official release.
The Centre has also started working on building a Paika Rebellion Memorial at Barunei in Khurda district. On December 24, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had released coins and postal stamps on Paika Rebellion. On December 8, 2019, former President Ram Nath Kovind laid the foundation stone of the memorial at Barunei.
