The number of potholes on Victorian roads has almost tripled in just a year, with country drivers facing the greatest danger as a result.
According to Snap Send Solve, an app that allows residents to easily report community issues, 8912 potholes were reported on Victorian roads during the period of June 2022 to June 2023.

That’s a stark increase when compared to the number of reported potholes in June 2021 to June 2022, which was just over 3000.
“Some of those potholes aren’t just potholes, they’re actually the size of a kitchen table,” Victorian Transport Association chief executive Peter Anderson told 7NEWS.
The state government has been forced to put multi-million dollar resurfacing works on hold so that the focus can be shifted on short-term repairs.
“We can throw the money at it, but we actually need the people and the equipment to actually rebuild the roads,” Anderson said.
Anderson singled out the Melba Hwy, which starts in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and ends in Yea, citing it as one of the worst regional roads in Victoria.
The highway is known for its potholes, with Facebook page Potholes of Melba Hwy dedicated to sharing photos of the road’s dire state.
“I’ve never seen it so bad,” one person wrote on the page late last month.
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said the government had invested almost $7 billion on Victorian roads in the past 10 years.
